The Band
Covering tracks from both the Bonn Scott and Brian Johnson eras with one singer, playing the hits of AC/DC and having a blast in the process, Angus guarantee a fantastic night out for any AC/DC fan or rocker.
Gareth, the lead singer is a gifted and talented performer, but no-one knows how. He had no vocal training or experience of performing live. He knows that a key opens locks and timing is something for the drummer to worry about. He was once asked, “how do you hit and maintain that high falsetto”, to which Gareth looked stunned like a rabbit in the headlights. Clearly he has a gift to achieve what he does and he does it with the style and conviction you expect from the front man. Gareth has spent his time with Angus developing his stage craft and voice and has the stage presence and confidence to fill the mighty Bonn Scott or Brian Johnson roles.
This boy was born to rock’n'roll, from an early age he was fed a diet of rock, and by the time he reached his early teens had seen and met some of the most influential rock stars in the world. His first guitar was a Fender given to him as a Christmas present when he was just 11 yeas old (some say it was blessed by the Devil himself). After being shown his first few chords by his father (another guitarist himself) he forged ahead soaking up riffs from the likes of AC/DC and Guns N’ Roses like a sponge. Very soon he was cracking out solos like a pro and while still at school formed his first band with school mates. Although this venture never got far, he soon formed punk band ”The Junkies”. After finishing school he attended the Academy of Music and Sound for two years, learning the chops and gigging experience that would no doubt serve well in the future. From here he established himself as a professional guitarist, even auditioning for established acts as “Towers of London”. Fresh out of music school he found himself with an audition for ”Angus”, a well established AC/DC tribute act. After donning the famous trademark school uniform he took the band to another level and became the regular ”Angus Young”. It seemed a natural progression, and with the other members of the band who were already accomplished musicians, they seemed to take another step up. Now watching them play together is probably the closest you’ll ever get to the real DC. They have a good following of hardcore DC fans, and this alone should tell you that they are a band going places.
On rhythm guitar and backing vocal duties is Ewan Miller. Born in Stoke-onTrent but with a beer swilling Aussie heart, Ewan is a die-hard AC/DC fan. He may not look a great deal like Malcolm Young but wears a grubby t-shirt with pride and gets his musical kicks metronomically grinding out the rhythm parts on his battered old guitar and hanging back with Rich and Matt in the engine room of the band. Ewan has worked in the music industry for many years as a guitarist, writer, teacher, producer and music industry consultant. Although his main love is dirty rock’n'roll, Ewan has played in blues, reggae and punk bands, recorded school choirs and has written, produced and sessioned for Folk,Rap and R’n'B acts. He’s a lover of all musical genres but he admitts that he’s happiest working on-stage,with ‘ANGUS’ having his ears damaged and trousers flapped by his S.G and 100watt Marshall Valve amp.
Matt plays the bass. The youngest member of the band, he brings life to the backline with an energetic stage performance, accurate bass skills and backing vocals. Matt learnt his skills with his school band AKA and has taken his influences from AC/DC, Guns ‘n Roses, Green Day, My Chemical Romance, Iron Maiden and many others both old and new. He plays with passion and conviction and holds the rhythm section together. Has the stamina of youth on his side and plays each gig like it might be his last.
Rich spent 11 years in a shed learning to play drums and was unearthed when local stalwarts of the Plymouth pub circuit Piledriver, asked if he would try out for them. He joined the group playing classic 12 bar rock and roll and learnt to play live performances across Plymouth and Cornwall. After several years of rockin’ out with Piledriver, Rich’s time came to an end and in this interim, met other musicians and formed The Craving. Rich played indie rock and many other music styles with The Craving and enjoyed the experience of playing new and modern material, which further developed his drumming experience. When Rich’s term with the Craving ended, the chance event in Gareth’s van happened, where he heard him singing along to AC/DC, which started the fantastic journey Angus are now on.
History
The idea for an AC/DC tribute was founded when drummer Rich heard his brother in law Gareth singing along to his favourite band (the legendary AC/DC) whilst driving his van. They decided that Gareth would make a great front-man for a fun pub-rock band and they asked Rich’s son Matt to play bass for this new project, forming the family-centred core of any self-respecting AC/DC tribute.
The search for two guitarists to fill the Angus and Malcolm roles commenced. Auditions saw Ewan Miller join the group playing rhythm guitar and Shaun Kelly took on the Angus role. After 12 months Angus had toured their version of AC/DC classics across the South West and were steadily building a good reputation for sounding like AC/DC. Unfortunately, Shaun’s commitments with his other band made it difficult to satisfy gig offers and the band were unable to promote themselves effectively so a stand in was sought.
Tris Gaskell joined the group and brought a new dynamic to the stage show, taking on the Angus role and replicating the sights and sounds of Angus in full flow. The decision was made to use Tris as the main guitarist for the band and Angus became a tribute to AC/DC. Angus worked hard to replicate the stage craft and show of a live performance, with the focus being on getting the sound right and putting on a show to leave even the hardest AC/DC fans impressed.
